Satisfactory cleaning of a milk tank (and milking equipment) should normally be done with a hot detergent solution On the farm, hot water is not always readily available and its preparation involves an increasing expenditure of energy.

However, the heat extracted from the milk is evacuated as a pure waste into the environment at the condenser of the refrigeration unit.

Some people might think that if a temperature exchanger is placed on the line from the compressor to the condenser, in which the hot vapours of the refrigerant circulate, it is possible to partially recover the heat.

Today’s heat recovery units consist of a more or less complex refrigerant-water heat exchanger. The simplest type is a coil immersed in an enclosure of water in which the hot refrigerant circulates. The vapours of the latter reach at least 80°C. The recuperator partially acts as a condenser.

As soon as the milk from the first milking arrives in the direct expansion tank, the refrigeration unit is switched on. The condensation of the refrigerant quickly becomes higher than that of the water in the recuperator.

After a certain operating time (20-30 minutes) the two temperatures are equalized and then reversed. In fact, the water in the recuperator has heated up and the condensation temperature has decreased according to a curve that approximately follows that of the milk temperature. The heat recovery is then much lower and the water temperature stabilizes fairly quickly. In the end, the recovery is about 30% of the total amount of heat released, which represents approximately 45% of that from the milk. During subsequent milkings the amount of heat recovered is even lower because the condensation temperature is lower since the temperature of the hot milk + chilled milk mixture is lower than at the first milking (source: milk refrigeration on the farm and organisation of transport by F. OVERALL COMPOSITION

The ECOTRAITE thermodynamic water heater consists of 2 units: an outdoor unit equipped with Inverter technology and a heat storage tank.

ENERGY SAVING

The combination of the 2 technologies, heat pump and accumulator, makes it possible to make significant savings

– Heat pump technology reduces the energy required to produce domestic hot water by up to 70% (compared to a conventional storage tank).

The semi-instantaneous production of hot water, coupled with the absence of additional energy in the water disinfection cycle, generates further energy gains.

Thus the new thermodynamic water heater consumes up to 3 times less electricity than a traditional electric water heater.

OPTIMISED HOT WATER PRODUCTION

The tank of the storage tank consists of 2 layers of polypropylene between which a polyurethane foam is injected to ensure perfect insulation of the water heater. In the tank, a corrugated stainless steel exchanger with a capacity of approximately 29L is placed throughout the entire height of the accumulator to ensure perfect stratification and optimize the production of hot water.

Contrary to traditional tanks, the hot water that will be consumed is not stored in the storage tank. It is instantly
heated as it passes through the tank.

SEMI-INSTANTANEOUS HOT WATER PRODUCTION

The ECOTRAITE thermodynamic water heater is equipped with direct condensation technology and has 2 stainless steel heat exchangers: the first is dedicated to the production of domestic hot water, the second to store energy.
During installation, the storage tank is filled with water called «technical water». This water «stores» the energy and will later release it to heat the domestic hot water. The cold city water enters the storage tank via the second coil exchanger and is heated in contact with the technical water contained in the storage tank, according to the semiinstantaneous production principle.

FURTHER ADVANTAGES OF THE STORAGE TANK

  • Corrugated stainless steel balloon heat exchanger
    that eliminates the risk of scale deposits.
  • Plate heat exchanger, anode, expansion vessel and
    expansion system are not required.
  • No maintenance required on the electric make-up: no
    contact with drinking water.

Thus the new thermodynamic water heater consumes up to 3 times less electricity than a traditional electric water heater.

QUALITY WATER

The absence of water storage has a strong influence on the quality of the water thus produced; it is more hygienic and eliminates any risk of legionella. The hot water temperature can be lowered to 48°C in order to increase the performance of the system.
